Who can forget the famous line “there is no place like home, there is no place like home” repeated over and over again. It really formed the crux of the oh-so-famous story Wizard of Oz. And true it is for most of us!
Dorothy stole our hearts back then and so it is only natural that a lot of our younger kin may want to dress up like Dorothy for their fancy dress affairs. If this is the case it should not be a big problem. Most of the material can be sourced easily. And the dress and the shoes should be easy enough to put together. Following are some easy to follow steps on how to make a Dorothy dress from the Wizard of Oz.
1) The Blue Gingham Dress
Dorothy travelled far and wide in this blue checkered dress. Gingham is a quintessential look, especially for girls of that age group. Therefore sourcing a blue gingham dress or some checkered material is crucial to achieving the Dorothy look. The dress in question had a fitted waist and appeared like an apron from the centre downwards. Another essential feature was the matching blouse.
2) Puffy-sleeved White Blouse
The look cannot be complete without a puffy sleeved white blouse. Dorothy wore the blouse under the blue dress at all times.
3) The Pigtails
Any big fan of the Wizard of Oz will remember the cute little pigtails which were Dorothy’s signature hair do. Anybody wanting to dress like Dorothy should be ready to put their hair up in pigtails. If your hair is too short, it is recommended that you buy a hair piece to do the trick.
Part the hair carefully down the middle. Tie the hair back into two pigtails and complete the look with some blue ribbon.
4) The Essential Ruby Red Slippers
The Dorothy look cannot be complete without some sparkly red shoes. Add some ballet slippers or pumps to complete the look. Dorothy wore them with a pair of white socks. Therefore don’t forget to add those to the ensemble as well. If sequined shoes are difficult to source, you can glue some sequins onto the shoes yourself. Just buy a pair of red pumps and glue on red sparkles and sequins all through from the front till the end.
5) Accessorize
Dorothy had looks, brain and luck going for her. If you want some of her good fortune to rub off on you, try to match the clothes and shoes with some of her favorite accessories. Toto being the first one that comes to mind, you can place a toy dog into a basket and carry it along. If you have a live dog that’s even better, although it may not be allowed inside some of the A-lister parties.
There you have it! Some of the essential must-haves, if you or your child wants to sport a Dorothy look for a fancy dress party.
